All material and classes are delivered in an environment and using materials and techniques that can be adapted to the needs of students with special needs.

Students are supplied with comprehensive course notes for each module, . with use also made of web-based and web set materials. Students are not generally required to buy any more than 1 textbook per module. Napier Learning Information Services (library) provides a wide range of learning resources both in paper and electronic formats; in addition, students have full access to learning resources in Aston University library.

Students should have access to their own laptop or PC, printer and internet connection, as this is a requirement for all distance learning students on the MSc.

Students are expected to attend all timetabled classes. These will take place on Mondays between 9.00am and 4.30pm. Examinations are taken at the end of Semesters 1 and 2 at the same time as those conducted at Edinburgh Napier University, in weeks 14 and 15 of each semester. The precise dates of the exams are not known until week 8 of each semester.

If you are a student with special needs...

The Birmingham and Midland Institute, where lectures will take place in the heart of Birmingham city centre, is fully accessible to those with mobility difficulties, and staff will do all they can to ensure that the access needs of all students with special needs and disabilities are met. You are advised to contact the course administrator in Birmingham to discuss your individual learning support needs. All programme material is available electronically. A range of equipment suitable for students with hearing or visual impairment or with specific learning difficulties is available, with staff on hand to offer support and advice.

The Aston Learning Information Centres (library) has induction loops at service points, and access to CCTV enlargers.

Assessment

Each taught module is assessed by a combination of coursework (written assignment) and formal examination. Coursework is completed while studying the module and exams are held at the end of Semesters 1 and 2, normally in the second and third weeks of December and the last two weeks of April, depending upon when Easter falls. The dissertation module is assessed by the written dissertation and in some cases by a viva voce examination with up to three members of teaching staff

The MSc programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators of the Institution of Civil Engineers as approved 'Further Learning' (formerly referred to as 'Matching Section') for students with a B.Eng (Hons) who wish to train to become Chartered Engineers. The programme is also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and students awarded the MSc will be exempt from MCILT examinations.
